Why entrepreneurship? I love the freedom and autonomy. In my previous roles (in banking), my schedule was very rigid and I worked a lot of hours. I work harder now, but it's different. I'm working for me and while I may work more evenings than I did at the bank, I also take more days off and leave early to accommodate. I spend more time with my son now than I did before having my own practice. I'm a single mother of a child with medical issues and a regular 9-5 is difficult in that situation. My practice allows me the flexibility to work from home or if need be, from a doctor's waiting room.
Did entrepreneurship find you or did you find it? Both. Edward Jones recruited me 3 years before I took the leap. When my situation changed a few years later, I contacted them. I met with some of the other area financial advisors and realized that it was perfect for me.
As a business leader, what’s some of your greatest challenges? Time management and building new clientele. It takes time to understand what's important to my clients and to build personalized strategies to help them achieve their goals so time management is extremely important.
When you’re not in business mode, what do you do for down time? I spend time with my 5 year old son and our 2 dogs. I love to read or watch movies and I work on building my knowledge with additional certifications in my industry. I'm also on the Executive Leadership Team for March of Dimes, a national charity focused on premature births and birth defects.
As a CEO Chick, how are you dominating your industry? I'm a quick learner and I love learning and absorbing knowledge. I'm always reading something to grow my business, expand my knowledge, or simply improve myself in one way or another. I'm passionate about what I do and I believe that shows with my clients.
What your number one advice to a fellow CEO chick or aspiring business leader? Knowledge is power. Become an expert in your field. People seek out the experts.
What’s three things you would tell your younger self in business?
1. Start earlier
2. Sacrifice time in the beginning so that you can have more freedom later
3. Don't settle, even for a few years. Find your passion early and stick with growing it.
What keeps you creative in business? My clients. I develop strong relationships with them and care a lot about them so I spend a lot of time ensuring I find the best strategies to help them achieve their goals.
What can we expect next from you? Growth in my own field. I'm in the process of getting my Accredited Asset Management Specialist certification and I plan to get my Certified Financial Planner accreditation after that. I don't anticipate starting any additional endeavors but to grow my current practice, although my 5 year old son wants to start a bow tie business!
